OUR PHILOSOPHY

Animal Welfare

We believe in the fundamental right of every animal to experience a truly good life with the highest level of care and welfare. We are firm believers in the power and the benefits of enrichment and positive training techniques, giving back to animals the choice and control they deserve . . .

It is our responsibility to ensure animals the opportunity to voluntary cooperate in daily husbandry and in their individual medical care, and to have the choice to say “no” as well. We must provide the best life possible for every animal, one in which they thrive. That is why we have dedicated our careers to walking the talk and building skills in others so they can do the same.

Whenever and however possible, we spread the word. Knowledge leads to action and we are committed to doing all we can to improve the lives of animals everywhere. That’s why we at AE have a long history of donating our time and openly sharing our experience and expertise.

Pro-Bono Work

We have provided pro bono consulting services and workshops on positive reinforcement training, enrichment, and protected contact elephant management in several countries including: Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, Romania, Mexico, India, Argentina, and Chile.

One of our longer running pro bono efforts has been a collaboration with the non-profit animal welfare organization Animals Asia and the Chinese Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Teaming up with instructor Debbie Ng from Shape of Enrichment, for 7 years in a row we have developed and taught Workshops hosted by zoos in a different city every year. All Workshop presentations and manuals are translated into Mandarin and sessions are conducted with simultaneous translations, thanks to Animals Asia.

We have reached well over 300 staff from zoological institutions throughout China, teaching them the fundamentals of positive reinforcement training and enrichment for all animals. We also developed and taught workshops focusing on primates and on protected contact management for elephants. We intend to continue these Workshops indefinitely.

Our Partners

Shape of Enrichment

The Shape of Enrichment, Inc. was founded in 1991 by Valerie Hare and Karen Worley. Shape (as we fondly call it) is a non-profit dedicated to promoting environmental and behavioral enrichment efforts for animals in human care, and encouraging improvements in animal welfare worldwide through education and international exchanges of enrichment theory and application.

With AE’s focus on positive reinforcement training, and Shape’s focus on enrichment, the powerful synergy between the 2 organizations was apparent from the moment we all met. And for the last 25 years plus, we have worked together on an array of workshops and animal welfare projects internationally. This long history of collaboration between Gail, Margaret, and Valerie led to the joint authorship of our book: Training, Enrichment, and Problem Solving: A behavioral management approach to enhancing animal welfare.

Rescue And Rehabilitation

We at Active Environments have always had a personal and professional commitment to the protection and conservation of species and the environment. That’s why in 1998 we formed Wildlife in Need (WIN), a US based non-profit organization. WIN’s primary function for the last 18 years is to operate the WIN Rescue Center in the Subic Bay Forest Preserve on the island of Luzan, Philippines. The Philippines is a country of incredible biodiversity and massive environmental devastation. The WIN Rescue Center cares for sick and injured wildlife including animals confiscated from the illegal wildlife pet trade. Whenever possible animals are returned to the wild. Those unfit for release are provided a safe permanent home at WIN.

Our mission: WIN ensures the welfare of individual animals and contributes to the conservation of threatened species through wildlife rescue and rehabilitation, habitat protection, public education, and professional training.

Wildlife in Need is also a co-founder of the Philippine Marine Mammal Stranding Network, a national organization for the rescue and rehabilitation of whales, dolphins, and dugongs throughout the Philippines.
